Pretrial Program

Start Date:
1994
Description:
The Waukesha County Pretrial Screening program administers the Public Safety Assessment (PSA) pretrial risk tool to all newly booked defendants in the Waukesha County Jail for the purpose of determining a defendant's likelihood of failing to appear for future court hearings or committing new criminal acts while released in the community during the pretrial phase. Staff prepare a report for the Court prior to the initial court appearance to assist the judicial officer with making more informed release decisions and setting appropriate conditions of bail. The Waukesha County Pretrial Supervision program provides supervision and monitoring of adults with pending misdemeanor and felony charges while awaiting trial or adjudication to ensure appearances at court hearings and that conditions of bond are met. The program refers defendants to community-based services according to individual needs to reduce the likelihood of recidivism and serves as an alternative to pretrial incarceration.
